The Crew 1 GamePlay
The moment you start up The Crew, you’re thrown right into the open world and able to explore at will. After a brief intro mission, you’ll pick your starting location and vehicle. Then you’re truly set loose to experience the game however you like.
The first thing that struck me was just how massive the map of the United States is. You can truly drive from coast to coast, passing through dozens of cities and iconic landmarks. I spent hours just aimlessly exploring, taking in the sights and sounds of each diverse region. Whether you’re cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway or racing across the plains, the environments feel authentic and immersive.
Of course, the main draw is the variety of racing disciplines on offer. You can hop on the freeway and test your top speed in drag races, weave through city streets in competitive circuit events, or drift around tight mountain curves. Mastering each vehicle type, like sports cars, trucks or motorcycles, provides a unique challenge too. As you rise through the ranks, the events get more intense with higher skilled opponents.
My personal favorite was definitely street racing. Cruising the open roads at night, taking on all challengers and building up a reputation was very satisfying. I’d pull over whenever I saw another racer and we’d have impromptu showdowns. The handling of each car feels distinct, so getting a feel for its limits through drifting or tight cornering was really rewarding.
Of course, the true endgame content is tackling the national series. Earn your way to the top of circuits, drags, off-road, etc to prove you’re the best driver in the country. The final boss races really test your skills, especially when you’re going wheel to wheel at 200+ mph! It took me dozens of hours but the sense of accomplishment at reaching the pinnacle was unreal.
Whether cruising the countryside or pushing your abilities, The Crew delivers an arcade racing experience like no other. Years later, I still find myself returning to its massive open world just to get my motor running. The variety and freedom to play however you want gives it incredible replay value.
